YouTube Caption Optimizer

Optimize YouTube descriptions: the first 150 characters, keywords, timestamps, chapters, and links. Free, no signup.

A YouTube description is not a caption — it is 5,000 characters of metadata, and only the first 150 or so are visible before "…more". This tool checks that opening, the keyword coverage, and whether the rest is structured for chapters and links.

It is for creators who want their descriptions doing work in YouTube and Google search rather than holding a wall of unread affiliate links.

What the description is actually for

Context for the ranking system. YouTube reads the title, description, and transcript together to work out what a video is about and who to suggest it to. A description that states the subject in plain language — including the phrasing people actually search — gives it a much better signal than a paragraph of channel boilerplate.

The first two lines are the part humans read. They appear under the video and in some search contexts, so they should restate the promise of the title and add the one detail the title could not fit. Everything below the fold is for machines, chapters, and the small share of viewers who expand.

Chapters. Timestamps starting at 0:00, one per line, turn into navigable chapters and often surface as key moments in Google search results. This is one of the few description features with a direct, visible ranking payoff.

Structure, keywords, and links

The cap is 5,000 characters. A good structure: two lines of summary, a blank line, chapters, a blank line, links and resources mentioned, then channel boilerplate and social links last. Nobody reads the boilerplate — keep it at the bottom where it cannot cost you the opening.

Use the target phrase naturally in the first sentence and once or twice more further down. Repeating it fifteen times does not help and reads badly to the humans who do expand. Keyword stuffing in descriptions has been ineffective for a long time.

Hashtags: up to three appear above the video title. They are one of the few places on YouTube where hashtags are genuinely visible, so use them for the actual topic, not for reach in general.

Put the most important link first. Descriptions truncate in the mobile app and links below the fold get a fraction of the clicks.

Common YouTube description mistakes

Opening with "Welcome back to the channel!". That is the one line most viewers see and it says nothing about the video.

Copying the same description to every video. It gives YouTube identical metadata for different content and wastes the strongest per-video ranking field you control.

Leading with sponsor and affiliate blocks. They belong under the chapters, not above them.

Skipping timestamps on anything over about four minutes. Chapters improve retention, get surfaced in search, and cost two minutes to write.

How it works

Use AI YouTube Caption Optimizer in 4 Easy Steps

01

Paste your YouTube caption

Drop in the caption you already wrote. The character counter is set to YouTube's 5000-character limit, so you will see immediately if it needs cutting.

02

Read the breakdown, not just the score

Hook, length, hashtags, readability, and call to action are scored separately against YouTube norms. Fix the one that is dragging rather than rewriting everything.

03

Put your voice back in

Take the rewrite's structure and your original's texture. AI rewrites tend to flatten idiom and cut the specific number — those are usually the best parts.

04

Stop rewriting captions by hand

Bolta drafts YouTube captions in your brand voice on a schedule and waits for your approval before anything publishes.

Why it's different

Why choose Bolta AI YouTube Caption Optimizer?

Tuned to YouTube

Length, hashtag count, and hook weighting all follow YouTube's actual behaviour rather than a generic caption checklist.

Scored by dimension

Hook, structure, hashtags, sentiment, and call to action are graded separately, so the output tells you what to change.

Hashtag guidance that says no

Most tools add hashtags. This one tells you when YouTube does not reward them — which is more often than people expect.

Free and instant

No account, no credit card, no trial timer. Paste, read, rewrite, post.

The engine behind the product

Same caption logic Bolta uses when it writes YouTube posts for you on a schedule — with your approval before anything goes out.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long should a YouTube description be?

The limit is 5,000 characters. Aim for 200 to 400 words for most videos: two lines of summary, chapters, links, then boilerplate. Longer is fine when there is real content — resources, references, corrections — but padding does not help ranking.

How much of the description is visible before "more"?

Roughly the first 150 characters, or about two to three lines. Treat that as the only part a human will read and put the video's actual promise there rather than a channel greeting.

Do keywords in the description affect YouTube search?

Yes, in combination with the title and transcript — YouTube uses the description to understand the topic. Use the target phrase naturally in the first sentence and once or twice more. Stuffing it repeatedly does not work and has not for years.

Do timestamps and chapters help?

Meaningfully. Timestamps starting at 0:00, one per line, become navigable chapters, improve retention because viewers can find the part they want, and are sometimes surfaced as key moments in Google search results.

Should I use hashtags in a YouTube description?

Up to three, and they display above the video title — one of the few places hashtags are genuinely visible on YouTube. Use them for the specific topic. More than three and YouTube ignores all of them.

Can I reuse the same description across videos?

Only the boilerplate block at the bottom. The summary, chapters, and links should be unique per video — the description is the strongest per-video metadata field you control, and duplicating it wastes it.
