Twitter/X Caption Optimizer

Tighten posts for X: 280-character discipline, first-two-lines preview, reply bait that works, link handling. Free, no signup.

X is a compression problem. This tool checks whether your post survives 280 characters without losing the point, whether the first two lines work as a standalone preview in the timeline, and whether anything in it invites a reply.

It is for people posting several times a day — founders, marketers, and anyone building an audience in public — who need the edit pass, not the idea.

Bolta writes your Twitter/X captions in your brand voice, automatically — and waits for your approval before posting.

What actually travels on X

Replies are the currency. The algorithm weights a reply far above a like, and it weights conversation you participate in above conversation you merely started. A post engineered to get a reply — a specific claim, a number someone will dispute, an incomplete list — outperforms a well-written observation nobody can respond to.

The timeline shows roughly the first two lines before "Show more". That preview is your whole post as far as most of the feed is concerned. If the punchline is in line four, it does not exist.

Hashtags do nothing for discovery on X anymore and read as dated. One is tolerable if it is a real community tag; two or more looks like marketing and gets skipped.

Length, links, and threads

280 characters is the constraint worth writing to even if you have a Premium account with a higher cap. Short posts get read; long posts get scrolled. Where you genuinely need more room, write a thread with a first post that stands alone — most people will never open it, so post one has to be worth reading by itself.

Links count as 23 characters regardless of length, and posts with external links historically get less distribution than posts without. The workaround everyone converged on is the same: make the post work on its own, put the link in the first reply.

Cut adverbs, cut "I think", cut the setup clause. The single most reliable improvement to a post on X is deleting the first six words.

Common X caption mistakes

Writing a LinkedIn post on X. Line-broken listicles with an inspirational close read as imported content and get treated as such.

Using all 280 characters because they are there. The best-performing posts are usually well under the cap; the limit is a ceiling, not a target.

Engagement bait — "RT if you agree", "drop a 🔥". It is easy to detect, it attracts the wrong replies, and the resulting engagement does not compound into followers.

Threads with no payoff in post one. If someone has to open the thread to learn what it is about, most will not.

How it works

Use AI Twitter/X Caption Optimizer in 4 Easy Steps

01

Paste your Twitter/X caption

Drop in the caption you already wrote. The character counter is set to Twitter/X's 280-character limit, so you will see immediately if it needs cutting.

02

Read the breakdown, not just the score

Hook, length, hashtags, readability, and call to action are scored separately against Twitter/X norms. Fix the one that is dragging rather than rewriting everything.

03

Put your voice back in

Take the rewrite's structure and your original's texture. AI rewrites tend to flatten idiom and cut the specific number — those are usually the best parts.

04

Stop rewriting captions by hand

Bolta drafts Twitter/X captions in your brand voice on a schedule and waits for your approval before anything publishes.

Why it's different

Why choose Bolta AI Twitter/X Caption Optimizer?

Tuned to Twitter/X

Length, hashtag count, and hook weighting all follow Twitter/X's actual behaviour rather than a generic caption checklist.

Scored by dimension

Hook, structure, hashtags, sentiment, and call to action are graded separately, so the output tells you what to change.

Hashtag guidance that says no

Most tools add hashtags. This one tells you when Twitter/X does not reward them — which is more often than people expect.

Free and instant

No account, no credit card, no trial timer. Paste, read, rewrite, post.

The engine behind the product

Same caption logic Bolta uses when it writes Twitter/X posts for you on a schedule — with your approval before anything goes out.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long should a post on X be?

Under 280 characters, and ideally well under. Premium accounts can post much longer, but the timeline truncates after about two lines and long posts are scrolled past. Treat brevity as a feature of the platform rather than a limit to work around.

Do hashtags help on X?

Not meaningfully. Discovery on X runs on the recommendation graph and search, not tags. One hashtag is fine if it is an active community tag; more than that reads as promotional and tends to depress engagement.

Do links reduce reach on X?

Posts with external links generally see less distribution than posts without. The common fix is to write a post that is complete on its own and put the link in the first reply, so the main post is judged on its own merits.

How do I get replies instead of just likes?

Make a specific, falsifiable claim, ask a question with more than one defensible answer, or leave an obvious gap someone can fill. Vague prompts like "thoughts?" get ignored. Then reply to the replies — participating in the thread is itself a ranking signal.

Should I write threads or single posts?

Single posts for most things. Use a thread only when the idea genuinely needs sequence, and write post one so it stands alone — the majority of impressions never leave the timeline, so post one carries the post.

How many characters do links and images use?

Any URL counts as 23 characters no matter how long it is, and attached media does not consume caption characters. So a post with an image and a link has roughly 257 characters of usable text.
