AI Caption Optimizer

Paste a caption, get it scored and rewritten for the platform you're actually posting to.

Paste a caption you have already written and this tool scores it the way a platform does: does the first line earn the tap, is the length right for the feed it lands in, does the hashtag set do any work, and is there a reason to reply.

It is built for people who post regularly — creators, founders, and the person at a small company who owns the account — and who want a second opinion in ten seconds rather than a course on copywriting.

Bolta writes your captions in your brand voice, automatically — and waits for your approval before posting.

You just used the AI Caption Optimizer. That was one output. Bolta does this every day, on schedule.

What a good caption actually does

A caption has one job before it has any other job: survive the first line. Every feed truncates. Instagram shows roughly 125 characters, LinkedIn about 140 on mobile, Facebook three lines. Whatever sits after the fold only exists if the opening line made someone tap "more". Optimising a caption is mostly optimising that opening line and then making sure nothing after it wastes the attention you just bought.

The second job is to give the reader something to do. Not "double tap if you agree" — platforms have been dampening engagement bait for years — but a genuine prompt: a question you actually want answered, a disagreement you are inviting, a specific next step. Replies and saves are weighted far more heavily than likes on every major feed, and they are the two things a caption can directly cause.

The third job is to be about something searchable. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Pinterest all run keyword search over caption text now. Writing the plain words a person would type — "sourdough starter troubleshooting", not "the loaf chronicles pt 4" — is worth more long-tail reach than a block of hashtags.

How to use the output

Treat the score as a diagnostic, not a grade. A caption that scores 62 because it has no call to action is a one-line fix; a caption that scores 62 because the hook is buried in sentence three needs the paragraph reordered. Read which dimension is dragging before you rewrite anything.

Take the suggested rewrite as a draft, then put your voice back in. AI rewrites tend to flatten idiom, cut the specific number, and replace the odd word that made the sentence yours. The version worth posting is usually the rewrite's structure with your original's texture.

Then run it once more. Optimising the hook usually changes the length, and changing the length usually changes whether the CTA still lands above the fold. Two passes is normal; five means you are polishing something that was not worth posting.

Mistakes this tool will flag most often

Front-loading context. "So I've been thinking about this for a while and I wanted to share…" spends the only line that matters on throat-clearing. Cut until the first sentence is the claim.

One caption pasted to five platforms. A 280-character post reads thin on LinkedIn; a 2,000-character LinkedIn essay is unreadable on Threads. Same idea, different shape — that is what the per-platform pages below are for.

Hashtag stuffing. Thirty tags on Instagram no longer buys reach and reads as spam; hashtags actively suppress nothing on X but do nothing either; on Mastodon and Pinterest they are load-bearing. The right number is platform-specific and this tool checks it against the platform you selected.

No point of view. The most common reason a technically clean caption gets no engagement is that nobody could disagree with it. If the caption could have been posted by any account in your category, it will perform like a caption from any account in your category.

Turn captions into a system

Most people start by optimising one caption. The ones who stay consistent turn it into a repeatable workflow that runs without them.

Reuse It Intentionally

Adapt your core content for multiple formats, angles, and platforms instantly.

Automate Future Schedules

Build a consistent posting plan that stays active even when you're busy.

Turn It Into a Loop

Put your content on autopilot with automated variations and recurring schedules.

How it works

Use AI Caption Optimizer in 4 Easy Steps

01

Pick the platform you're posting to

Caption rules are not portable. Choose the network below and you get scoring tuned to its truncation point, hashtag norms, and ranking signals.

02

Paste the caption you already wrote

The tool scores the hook, length, hashtags, readability, and call to action separately, so you can see which one is dragging the post down.

03

Rewrite, then run it once more

Fixing the hook usually changes the length, and changing the length usually moves the CTA below the fold. Two passes is normal.

04

Stop doing it by hand

Bolta writes captions in your brand voice on a schedule and waits for your approval before anything goes out.

Why it's different

Why choose Bolta AI Caption Optimizer?

Scored per platform, not generically

Three hashtags on LinkedIn, five on Instagram, none on Pinterest. The checks change with the network you selected instead of applying one rulebook everywhere.

Optimises for the fold

Every feed truncates. The first line gets weighted hardest because it is the only part most people will ever read.

Diagnostic, not a grade

Each dimension is scored on its own, so a low total tells you what to fix rather than just that something is wrong.

Ten seconds, no signup

Paste, read, rewrite. No account, no credit card, no trial timer sitting on top of the output.

The same engine Bolta ships with

This is the caption logic from the product, not a marketing demo. If you like the output, the agent version writes it on a schedule in your voice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the AI caption optimizer score my caption?

It evaluates the caption on the signals that actually move reach: whether the first line survives truncation, whether the length suits the feed, hashtag relevance and count, readability and line-break structure, sentiment, and whether there is a real call to action. Each dimension is scored separately so you can see which one is dragging rather than getting a single opaque number.

Is the caption optimizer free?

Yes. You can paste and optimise captions without an account, a credit card, or a trial. Paid Bolta plans exist for people who want captions written and scheduled on an ongoing schedule, but nothing on this page is gated.

Should I use the same caption on every platform?

No — the idea can travel, the caption should not. Instagram rewards a hook plus a story and a few relevant tags, X rewards compression, LinkedIn rewards a first line that earns a "see more" click and dwell time after it, Pinterest rewards plain keyword-rich description. Pick the platform page for the network you are posting to and optimise there.

How many hashtags should a caption have?

It depends entirely on the platform. Instagram: three to five genuinely relevant tags outperform thirty. X: zero to one — hashtags add no discovery benefit there anymore. LinkedIn: about three. Mastodon: essential, because discovery is hashtag-driven. Pinterest: skip them and write keywords into the description instead. The tool checks your count against the platform you selected.

Will optimising my captions guarantee more engagement?

No, and be suspicious of any tool that says otherwise. Caption quality is one input; the topic, the image or video, your audience, and posting time all matter. What optimisation reliably fixes is the self-inflicted damage — a buried hook, wrong length, no reason to reply — which is usually where the easy gains are.

Can I optimise captions for a client or brand account?

Yes. The tool has no notion of who owns the account, so it works the same for personal, creator, business, and agency-managed pages. If you manage several brands with different voices, that is the point where Bolta's brand voice profiles are more useful than a one-off optimiser.
