Bluesky Caption Optimizer

Optimize Bluesky posts for the 300-character cap, custom feeds, link cards, and alt text — free, no signup required.

Bluesky caps posts at 300 characters and its default feed is chronological, so reach comes from follows, reposts, and custom feeds rather than an engagement algorithm. This tool checks that your post fits and that it earns a repost on its own.

It is for people building an audience on Bluesky who want the compression right without the engagement-bait habits imported from elsewhere.

How reach works on Bluesky

The default Following feed is chronological. There is no system deciding to show your post to strangers, so distribution comes from reposts and from custom feeds — user-built feeds that pull in posts matching a topic, a hashtag, or a list of accounts.

That makes custom feeds the equivalent of hashtags-plus-algorithm elsewhere. Posts that clearly belong to a subject — and that use the topic words a feed builder would filter on — get picked up by the feeds for that subject and seen by people who do not follow you.

Replies are the culture. Bluesky's audience is conversational and skews toward people who left other platforms because of how they felt; posts that read as engagement farming land badly and get muted rather than argued with.

Length, links, and images

300 characters, hard. Bluesky counts graphemes rather than bytes, so emoji and non-Latin scripts behave more sensibly than on some platforms, but the ceiling is low and the discipline is the same as writing for X: cut the setup clause.

Links render as cards and, unlike on X, carry no known reach penalty. The URL still occupies characters, so a shortened or clean URL is worth the effort.

Alt text on images is expected and widely enforced socially. Bluesky prompts for it; add it.

Hashtags are supported and mildly useful for feed inclusion, but one or two is the norm. A hashtag block reads as imported content.

Common Bluesky mistakes

Auto-posting the same text to Bluesky, X, and Threads. It works mechanically and reads as absent — and this audience notices faster than most.

Threading long content. Bluesky's threading works but the audience prefers single, complete posts; if it needs five posts, it probably wants to be a blog link.

Using all 300 characters as a target. The best posts here are short and specific.

Ignoring feeds. Finding the two or three custom feeds your topic lives in, and writing so your posts qualify for them, is the highest-leverage thing you can do on the platform.

How it works

Use AI Bluesky Caption Optimizer in 4 Easy Steps

01

Paste your Bluesky caption

Drop in the caption you already wrote. The character counter is set to Bluesky's 300-character limit, so you will see immediately if it needs cutting.

02

Read the breakdown, not just the score

Hook, length, hashtags, readability, and call to action are scored separately against Bluesky norms. Fix the one that is dragging rather than rewriting everything.

03

Put your voice back in

Take the rewrite's structure and your original's texture. AI rewrites tend to flatten idiom and cut the specific number — those are usually the best parts.

04

Stop rewriting captions by hand

Bolta drafts Bluesky captions in your brand voice on a schedule and waits for your approval before anything publishes.

Why it's different

Why choose Bolta AI Bluesky Caption Optimizer?

Tuned to Bluesky

Length, hashtag count, and hook weighting all follow Bluesky's actual behaviour rather than a generic caption checklist.

Scored by dimension

Hook, structure, hashtags, sentiment, and call to action are graded separately, so the output tells you what to change.

Hashtag guidance that says no

Most tools add hashtags. This one tells you when Bluesky does not reward them — which is more often than people expect.

Free and instant

No account, no credit card, no trial timer. Paste, read, rewrite, post.

The engine behind the product

Same caption logic Bolta uses when it writes Bluesky posts for you on a schedule — with your approval before anything goes out.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit on Bluesky?

300 characters per post, counted in graphemes — so emoji and accented or non-Latin characters count as one each rather than several. Links consume their full visible length, unlike on X.

Do hashtags work on Bluesky?

Yes, but modestly. They are clickable and some custom feeds filter on them, so one or two relevant tags can get a post into a topic feed. A block of ten adds nothing and reads as cross-posted content.

What are custom feeds and why do they matter for captions?

Custom feeds are user-built feeds that pull in posts matching a topic, keyword, hashtag, or account list. Since the default timeline is chronological and follow-based, these feeds are the main way strangers find your posts — so writing in the plain topic words a feed filters on genuinely expands reach.

Do links reduce reach on Bluesky?

There is no known penalty. Links render as preview cards and behave normally, which is a meaningful difference from X. They do still consume characters against the 300 limit.

Should I add alt text to images on Bluesky?

Yes. The platform prompts for it, the community expects it, and posts without alt text get fewer reposts from accessibility-conscious users, who are a large part of the early audience.

How is writing for Bluesky different from writing for X?

Shorter limit, no algorithmic amplification, no link penalty, and an audience that reacts badly to engagement bait. Compression discipline carries over; the growth tactics do not.
