How reach works on Bluesky

The default Following feed is chronological. There is no system deciding to show your post to strangers, so distribution comes from reposts and from custom feeds — user-built feeds that pull in posts matching a topic, a hashtag, or a list of accounts.

That makes custom feeds the equivalent of hashtags-plus-algorithm elsewhere. Posts that clearly belong to a subject — and that use the topic words a feed builder would filter on — get picked up by the feeds for that subject and seen by people who do not follow you.

Replies are the culture. Bluesky's audience is conversational and skews toward people who left other platforms because of how they felt; posts that read as engagement farming land badly and get muted rather than argued with.

Length, links, and images

300 characters, hard. Bluesky counts graphemes rather than bytes, so emoji and non-Latin scripts behave more sensibly than on some platforms, but the ceiling is low and the discipline is the same as writing for X: cut the setup clause.

Links render as cards and, unlike on X, carry no known reach penalty. The URL still occupies characters, so a shortened or clean URL is worth the effort.

Alt text on images is expected and widely enforced socially. Bluesky prompts for it; add it.

Hashtags are supported and mildly useful for feed inclusion, but one or two is the norm. A hashtag block reads as imported content.

Common Bluesky mistakes

Auto-posting the same text to Bluesky, X, and Threads. It works mechanically and reads as absent — and this audience notices faster than most.

Threading long content. Bluesky's threading works but the audience prefers single, complete posts; if it needs five posts, it probably wants to be a blog link.

Using all 300 characters as a target. The best posts here are short and specific.

Ignoring feeds. Finding the two or three custom feeds your topic lives in, and writing so your posts qualify for them, is the highest-leverage thing you can do on the platform.
