Every subreddit has its own rules in the sidebar, and they're enforced by humans who have seen a thousand posts like yours. Common ones: no self-promotion, no links in your first post, a minimum account age or karma threshold, mandatory flair, a weekly megathread that all promotional content must live in. Breaking one gets you removed, and repeat offences get the domain itself banned across the sub.

Lurk first. Sort by top of the month and read what actually lands. Some subs want long technical write-ups; some remove anything over three paragraphs. There is no Reddit-wide voice — there are ten thousand local ones.

The tells that get a post downvoted are consistent: a headline with title case and a colon, an opening line that frames the topic in market terms, bolded section headers, a closing call to action. Reddit reads all of that as an ad. Write in first person about something that happened to you, include the part where it went badly, and let people ask the follow-up questions.

If you have a commercial interest, disclose it in the post. "I build a tool in this space, so discount accordingly" earns you more goodwill than any amount of careful omission, and omission is usually detected anyway.

Most of the value on Reddit comes from answering questions in threads that already have traffic, not from launching your own. A genuinely useful comment on a busy thread can be read by more people than a front-page post, and it builds the account history that makes your eventual post credible.

Reddit supports full markdown, so headings, lists and code blocks are available — but the ceiling for a comment is around 10,000 characters and almost nothing should approach it. Answer the question asked, in the first paragraph, then add context.

Posting the same text to eight subreddits in an afternoon. Reddit's spam detection catches this and so do the moderators, who talk to each other.

Creating a new account to post about your product. Low account age plus a first post about a URL you own is the single most-removed pattern on the site.

Arguing with the top comment. If the community says the post is an ad, the post is an ad; deleting and rewriting it next month with the marketing stripped out works far better than defending it.
