There is nothing to game. Your post appears in the timelines of people who follow you, in the local timeline of your instance, and in hashtag feeds. It travels further only if a human boosts it. Every technique built for algorithmic feeds — hook engineering, engagement bait, posting-time optimisation — does approximately nothing here.

What does work is being the person who posts the useful thing. Detailed answers, links with actual commentary, work-in-progress notes. Mastodon's audience skews technical and reads carefully, which means substance is rewarded and thinness is noticed.

Because there's no recommendation engine, hashtags do real work on Mastodon — people follow tags the way they follow accounts. Two to four specific, correctly-cased tags (#WebDev, not #webdev, for screen readers) put your post in front of people who don't follow you yet. This is the opposite of the advice for X or Threads.

The default post limit is 500 characters, though some instances raise it. Longer thoughts go behind a content warning as a summary plus body, which is a native feature rather than a workaround.

Alt text on images is close to mandatory. Posting an image without it will get you politely corrected, and repeatedly doing it will get you unfollowed. It takes ten seconds.

Content warnings are used generously — for politics, for food, for long posts, for anything someone might not want unfolding in their timeline unannounced. Using them reads as courtesy, not censorship.

Overt marketing lands badly. Mastodon's population largely left commercial platforms deliberately, and a post that reads as an ad gets silence rather than argument. Talking about what you're building is fine; selling at people is not.

Cross-posting from X automatically. It's visible immediately — the register is wrong, the alt text is missing, and the replies you never answer make it obvious nobody's home.

Expecting the follower counts you had elsewhere. Mastodon is smaller and slower, and the value is in the reply quality rather than the reach numbers.

Ignoring your instance's local timeline. It's the closest thing to built-in distribution the network has, and picking an instance aligned with your subject matter does more for you than any posting tactic.
