The mistakes that kill new Bluesky accounts, the behaviors that get you muted, and the one thing that always works.

The accounts that struggle on Bluesky usually share specific, fixable mistakes. Recognize them.
You import your X strategy unchanged: viral hooks, engagement bait, reply-guying high-status accounts. Bluesky has different norms. Cross-platform-pasting at velocity gets you ignored.
Fix: spend two weeks reading before you post. Match the register.
You post 4 times a day and never reply. Your follower count flatlines. You blame the platform.
Fix: 1:5 ratio of originals to replies. Sustained for 30 days.
Your bio says "Founder. Builder. Creator." Your posts wander between productivity tips, lifestyle, and product updates. Custom feeds can't categorize you. Starter pack curators can't include you. Followers can't predict what they'll get.
Fix: pick a specific niche. "Indie SaaS founder building in public" beats "founder/builder/creator."
You auto-cross-post from X. Your Bluesky posts include "rt if you agree" or thread numbering. Reads as imported.
Fix: strip platform-specific language. Or: rewrite once, post twice.
Your account follows 7 people. The platform reads this as inactive or low-quality. Algorithms (yes, even custom feeds have algorithms) deprioritize accounts that don't engage with the network.
Fix: follow 100-300 accounts in your niche. Engage with at least 20 of them weekly.
Your bio links to your product. Your pinned post is a launch announcement. Your second post is also a launch announcement. The audience smells it instantly.
Fix: keep promo to 10% of content. The other 90% is value. Your product earns mention because your insights earn trust.
Bluesky's mute culture is more active than X's. Once muted by a critical mass of your niche, growth is over. Here's what triggers it.
Showing up in every popular post's replies with low-effort comments. Bluesky's audience notices and mutes fast.
Fix: be selective. Reply when you have something genuine to add.
Following someone, then immediately DMing them about your product. Borderline always-mute behavior.
Fix: don't pitch in DMs unless you've had a multi-message public conversation first. Even then, sparingly.
Quoting someone to mock or pile on. The quote-post audience won't engage; the original poster's audience will mute you; bystanders will note the behavior.
Fix: disagree productively or not at all.
Engaging in Bluesky drama (and there is some) to build follows. The audience punishes this fast.
Fix: stay out of platform drama. Build on substance.
Same product post on every platform. Audience sees the seams.
Fix: rewrite the ad for each platform's tone. Or: don't ad-post on Bluesky at all.
"Follow for follow," "engagement pods," reply-trains. Visible at a glance to anyone who's been on the platform.
Fix: grow legitimately. The platform is small enough that shortcuts are seen.
If you ignore everything else in this course and only do one thing, do this:
That's it. That's the whole growth strategy.
That's the entire strategy. Most accounts that hit 10K followers on Bluesky did exactly this.
You finished the Bluesky course. The platform rewards the same discipline that builds any real audience: be specific, show up consistently, and treat every reply like the only person reading it is the only one who matters. Now go reply to someone good.
