Everywhere else, a bad comment is ignored. On Reddit it's actively buried, and enough of them attach to your username permanently. That asymmetry shapes everything: the correct instinct is to write for the person who's already suspicious of you, because in most subreddits somebody is.

The comments that rise share a shape. They answer the actual question in the first line, they say where the knowledge came from ("ran a shop like this for six years"), and they include the specific detail a generalist wouldn't know. Hedging, throat-clearing and enthusiasm all read as marketing. Confidence plus a caveat reads as expertise.

Every subreddit has its own rules, its own moderators, and its own automod configuration that can remove your comment for account age, karma, a keyword, or a link domain — often silently. Read the sidebar before commenting anywhere you intend to keep commenting. Many subreddits ban self-promotion outright, and the ones that allow it usually require a ratio of participation to promotion.

Comments support markdown, and formatting genuinely helps on long answers: a short intro, a bulleted list of the actual steps, and a one-line caveat at the end is the highest-performing structure for a how-to answer. Length is fine — the limit is 10,000 characters and the top comment on a technical thread is often several hundred words.

Never post an AI draft to Reddit verbatim. The audience is unusually good at spotting it, and "this is ChatGPT" is a top-level reply that ends the conversation. Use the draft for structure, then rewrite it in your own words with your own specifics — the numbers, the failure, the brand of the thing you actually used.

Drop any sentence that summarises what you just said. Reddit reads as conversation, not as an essay, and the concluding paragraph is the clearest tell that something was generated. If you have a commercial interest in the topic, disclose it in one short clause. It costs nothing and it's the difference between a downvote and a fair hearing.
