Last updated: 2026-04-27

What the X algorithm actually rewards in 2026, the verified-vs-unverified reach gap, and how the For You feed differs from Following.

## Summary

Lesson from the Bolta University course "X (Twitter) Mastery". The full lesson text follows.

## Who this is for

- Founders
- Creators
- Marketing teams
- Agencies

## Limitations and boundaries

- Course material describes the product and the platforms at the time of writing; verify current behaviour in the app.
- Social network features, limits, and algorithms change independently of Bolta.
- Current prices and plan limits must be verified on the Bolta pricing page.

## Lesson 1: What the Algorithm Rewards

X's algorithm rewards a specific set of signals. The accounts that grow are the ones aligned with those signals — even if they don't think about them explicitly.

### The signals that matter

1. **Engagement velocity.** How quickly a post accumulates engagement after posting. Fast engagement = wider distribution.
2. **Reply depth.** Posts with long reply threads get pushed harder than posts with just likes.
3. **Retweet/share rate.** Shares are the strongest signal of "this matters beyond likes."
4. **Profile visits.** When people read your post and click through to your profile, the algorithm reads that as quality.
5. **Watch time / dwell time.** On video and longer posts, how long people stay.
6. **Bookmark rate.** Underrated. A bookmark is a stronger signal than a like.

### What the algorithm penalizes

1. **Outbound links** in the post itself. Reach drops noticeably. (Workaround: link in reply, not in the main post.)
2. **Posts identical to other recent posts** of yours.
3. **Engagement bait phrases.** "Like and retweet if…" gets deboosted.
4. **Sudden behavior changes** that look bot-like (e.g., 50 follows in 5 minutes).
5. **Account age + low engagement.** New accounts with no engagement history start cold.

### The implication for your content

Optimize for early engagement velocity, reply depth, and shares. The fastest path to reach is content that:

- Generates strong opinions (gets replies)
- Is worth saving (gets bookmarks)
- Is worth sharing (gets retweets)

Posts that get only likes are the algorithm's worst case — engagement without depth.

## Lesson 2: Verified vs Unverified Reach

The verified gap is real, and pretending it isn't won't help you.

### What verified gives you

1. **Higher placement in replies** (verified replies show first by default).
2. **Longer post limits** (depending on the tier).
3. **Edit window.**
4. **A small organic reach boost** — modest, but real.
5. **Eligibility for creator payouts.**

### What unverified accounts can still do

1. **Be in the conversation.** Verified or not, replies still get read.
2. **Build a reputation.** Quality wins over time even without the boost.
3. **Get retweeted by verified accounts.** Each one extends reach significantly.
4. **Hit virality.** Strong original posts can still go viral unverified.

### Should you pay for verified?

If you're posting more than 5x a week and treating X as a serious distribution channel: yes. The cost is trivial relative to the reach difference.

If you're posting once a week to maintain presence: no. The boost only matters if you're feeding the algorithm consistently.

### What verified doesn't fix

Verified amplifies. It doesn't transform. A verified account posting weak content gets boosted weak content. A verified account posting strong content gets compounded growth. The content layer matters more than the verification layer.

## Lesson 3: For You vs Following

The two feeds drive very different behaviors. Understanding both is critical.

### For You feed

The algorithmic feed. What most users see by default.

**Driven by:**
- Engagement velocity on posts
- Account similarity (people who follow accounts similar to yours)
- Topic interest signals
- Verified status (modest boost)

**Implication for posting:** This is where new audiences find you. Posts optimized for For You should be self-contained — they have to make sense without context.

### Following feed

Chronological feed of accounts a user follows.

**Driven by:**
- Whoever the user follows, in time order
- Some recency bias

**Implication for posting:** This is where your existing audience sees you. Posts optimized for Following can be more contextual, conversational, in-the-moment.

### Posting strategy for both

A mature X strategy serves both feeds:

1. **70% of posts optimized for For You.** Self-contained, sharp hooks, designed to perform with strangers.
2. **30% optimized for Following.** Conversational, warm, builds the relationship with your existing audience.

### The "vibe" question

Some accounts are pure For You optimizers — every post is a viral attempt. Audience feels like a megaphone, not a community. Some accounts are pure Following optimizers — warm but never reaching strangers.

The accounts that compound do both.

### Common myths

1. *"The algorithm hates me."* Almost always not true. Posts that don't perform usually have a quality issue, not an algorithm issue.
2. *"I should post the same thing on different days to test."* No — the algorithm penalizes repeat posts.
3. *"The algorithm changes constantly so strategy is impossible."* Yes and no. The fundamentals (velocity, depth, shares) have been stable for years. The details shift.

### Action Steps

1. Look at your last 20 posts. Estimate: how many were For You optimized vs Following optimized?
2. Identify your strongest 3 posts in the last 30 days. What made them work? Replies? Shares? Bookmarks?
3. Decide whether to verify if you haven't. If you're posting 5+ times per week, the cost is worth it.

The algorithm isn't an enemy. It rewards specific behaviors; align with them and growth follows. Next lesson: the 280-character hook.
