PERSONALITY / TONE / STYLE / AVOID / MINDSET — refining each block over time without breaking the voice you've worked to build.

## Summary

Lesson from the Bolta University course "Voice DNA & Brand Agents". The full lesson text follows.

## Who this is for

- Founders
- Creators
- Marketing teams
- Agencies

## Limitations and boundaries

- Course material describes the product and the platforms at the time of writing; verify current behaviour in the app.
- Social network features, limits, and algorithms change independently of Bolta.
- Current prices and plan limits must be verified on the Bolta pricing page.

## Lesson 1: How Persona and Voice Interact

Voice is mechanics. Persona is identity. The agent uses both at the same time — voice tells it *how* to write, persona tells it *what kind of writer* is doing the writing.

### A simple way to picture it

Imagine giving a writing sample to two different writers:

- Writer A: a sharp founder who's been building for 10 years.
- Writer B: a junior marketer who's been building for 6 months.

If you handed both writers the same Voice DNA constraints (vocabulary, sentence structure, tone signals), they'd produce different posts. Voice constrains the *shape*. Persona shapes the *substance* and *direction*.

In Bolta, both layers run simultaneously. Voice keeps the post sounding like you. Persona keeps it pointed at the right topics, tone, and worldview.

### When they conflict

Sometimes voice and persona pull in different directions. Voice says "first person, casual, fragments." Persona says "authoritative thought-leader." The agent will produce something half-cooked.

The fix: align them deliberately. If your voice is casual, your persona should describe a *casual* expert, not a formal one.

## Lesson 2: Refining Each Block

Each of the five persona blocks deserves different attention.

### PERSONALITY — refine slowly

This is the slowest-changing block. Your personality doesn't shift week to week. Refine when:

- You've genuinely changed roles (e.g., from indie hacker to VC-backed founder).
- The personality you wrote turned out to be aspirational rather than real.
- Output keeps drifting toward a personality that isn't quite you.

**Refinement style:** small clarifications, not rewrites. "Sharp founder" → "Sharp, slightly self-deprecating founder who's allergic to corporate-speak."

### TONE — refine often

Tone is the most-frequently refined block because it's the most-often slightly wrong. Refine when:

- Posts feel right voice but wrong vibe.
- The agent is too formal or too casual relative to your taste.
- A specific tone signal (e.g., emojis) is appearing where you don't want it.

**Refinement style:** specific. "Be direct" is too vague. "Be direct, but never cold — leave warmth in even short posts" is usable.

### STYLE — refine when you spot patterns

Style is mechanical, so it shifts visibly when something's off:

- All posts are the same length.
- All posts use the same hook structure.
- Lists keep appearing where you'd write paragraphs.

**Refinement style:** prescriptive. "Vary post length — some 50 words, some 200, never every post the same." Specifics make it stick.

### AVOID — refine carefully

The AVOID block is tempting to overload. Resist. Every "avoid" item is friction; the agent is balancing all of them simultaneously.

Refine when:
- A specific phrase or pattern keeps appearing that you hate.
- A topic the agent shouldn't touch keeps surfacing.

**Refinement style:** keep AVOID under 7 items. If you're adding the 8th, ask whether something can be removed or merged.

### MINDSET — refine rarely

MINDSET is the deepest layer. It shapes which topics, hooks, and stances the agent gravitates toward. Refine when:

- The agent's content priorities don't match your strategic priorities.
- The "why" behind posts has drifted (e.g., from helping → selling).

**Refinement style:** reflective. "Why am I posting at all? What do I want readers to walk away with?" Answer that, and MINDSET writes itself.

## Lesson 3: When Refinement Becomes Rewrite

Most persona problems are fixable with surgical edits. Some aren't.

### Signs you need a full rewrite

1. You've been editing the persona every week for a month and it still doesn't feel right.
2. You've changed business model, audience, or platform focus dramatically.
3. The persona was AI-generated and you never seriously edited it.
4. Your three best posts have nothing in common with the persona's apparent intent.

### How to rewrite without losing learnings

1. **Don't delete the old persona.** Save it as a comment or backup.
2. **Rewrite from scratch.** Don't try to "fix" the old one — you'll inherit its biases.
3. **Keep voice profile separate.** Voice DNA isn't tied to persona; you don't need to retrain voice when you rewrite a persona.
4. **Run on Manual or Assisted for 7 days** after a rewrite. Watch closely.

### The over-refinement trap

Some founders refine personas weekly. Don't. Each refinement is a signal change to the agent. Too many signal changes and the agent never stabilizes. Output stays inconsistent.

A rule of thumb: at most one persona edit per week per agent. More than that and you're micromanaging instead of directing.

### Common myths

1. *"A long persona is a strong persona."* No — a focused persona is a strong persona. Aim for one screen.
2. *"Refining persona will fix performance."* Sometimes. Often, performance issues are about job instructions, schedule, or platform fit — not persona.
3. *"AI-generated personas are good enough."* They're a starting point. Your refinements are what make the agent yours.

### Action Steps

1. Open one of your agents. Read each of the five persona blocks. Score them 1-5 for clarity and specificity.
2. Pick the lowest-scoring block. Refine it surgically — one edit, focused.
3. Watch the next 5 outputs. Did the refinement show up? Adjust if needed.

A persona is a piece of writing that other AI uses to write more writing. Treat it with the care that implies. Next lesson: editing as training — why how you edit matters more than what you write.
