Last updated: 2026-04-27

Which Bolta presets fit Mastodon, the right cadence and post mix, and how to cross-post from Bolta without breaking culture.

## Summary

Lesson from the Bolta University course "Mastodon & the Fediverse". The full lesson text follows.

## Who this is for

- Founders
- Creators
- Marketing teams
- Agencies

## Limitations and boundaries

- Course material describes the product and the platforms at the time of writing; verify current behaviour in the app.
- Social network features, limits, and algorithms change independently of Bolta.
- Current prices and plan limits must be verified on the Bolta pricing page.

## Lesson 1: Which Presets Fit Mastodon

Mastodon's no-algorithm structure means some Bolta presets work differently here than elsewhere.

### Hype-Man — strong fit

Hype-Man drafts posts in your voice on a regular cadence. On Mastodon, this is most of the work.

**Configuration:**
- Voice DNA tuned for Mastodon — more deliberate, less punchy than X.
- Caption length: 200-500 chars typical (Mastodon's default limit is 500, with some instances supporting more).
- Hashtag rotation — 2-4 niche hashtags per post, CamelCase.
- CW awareness — Hype-Man should know when to add a content warning (politics, long posts, off-topic content).

### Hunter — moderate fit

Hunter's role on Mastodon is narrower than on X:

1. **Find boost candidates.** Posts in your niche worth boosting.
2. **Surface reply opportunities** for substantive engagement.
3. **Track competitor posting** without driving aggressive reply automation.

Don't auto-fire Hunter at every relevant post — Mastodon's audience is allergic to volume engagement. Use Hunter to surface 3-5 high-quality opportunities per day, then engage manually.

### Engager — limited fit

Mastodon's reply volume is much lower than X or Instagram. Engager mostly waits around.

**Configuration:** keep Engager off unless you have a comment section that genuinely needs help. For most accounts, manual reply management is fine.

### Analyst — moderate fit

Mastodon analytics are thin compared to centralized platforms. Analyst can still surface:

1. Which hashtags route best for your content.
2. Which post times perform.
3. Boost rate per post — the closest Mastodon has to engagement.

Less data than other platforms, but the patterns Analyst surfaces still help.

### Relationship Manager — situational

Useful if you're using Mastodon for genuine community-building (research, indie communities). Less useful for pure broadcast.

## Lesson 2: Cadence and Post Mix

Mastodon's no-algorithm reality means cadence matters less than mix and timing.

### Cadence

- **2-5 posts per day** is reasonable for active growth.
- **1-2 per day** for maintenance.
- **Below 1 per day** falls out of audience habit.
- **Above 8 per day** dilutes signal — your timeline starts to look spammy.

### Post mix

A working ratio:

- **60% original content.** Your posts in your niche.
- **30% boosts.** Curating others' content for your audience.
- **10% replies.** Substantive engagement on others' posts.

This is more boost-heavy than other platforms. Mastodon culture rewards curation alongside creation.

### Posting time

Mastodon doesn't have hyper-optimal time windows the way algorithmic platforms do. Posts decay slowly because there's no algorithmic timing pressure. That said:

- **Morning (8-11 AM your audience timezone)** — primary post.
- **Late afternoon (4-6 PM)** — secondary post.
- **Evening engagement window (8-10 PM)** — replies and boosts.

### Day-of-week

Mastodon engagement is steadier across the week than X. Weekends are still active. Friday afternoons drop a little, but not as dramatically.

### Letting Bolta optimize

After 30 days of data (longer than other platforms because volume is lower), let Bolta auto-schedule. Analyst will surface your audience's specific patterns.

## Lesson 3: Cross-Posting Without Breaking Culture

The biggest risk of cross-posting to Mastodon: importing X-flavored content unedited. The culture notices instantly.

### What to strip when cross-posting from X

1. **Quote-tweet references.** Don't translate.
2. **"RT if…" engagement bait.**
3. **Heavy hashtag stacks (5+).** Trim to 2-4.
4. **References to "the bird app" or X-specific drama.**
5. **Twitter shortlinks.** Keep destination URLs visible.

### What to add when cross-posting

1. **CamelCase hashtags.**
2. **Content warnings if relevant.**
3. **A slightly more substantive feel.** Sentence fragments work less well; complete thoughts work better.
4. **The right amount of length.** A 200-char tweet might benefit from being expanded to 350 chars on Mastodon.

### What to skip entirely

1. **Reply chains from X.** Out of context on Mastodon.
2. **Posts that mention X-specific features (Spaces, Communities, Premium).**
3. **Posts that depend on visual context only Twitter renders well.**

### From Threads to Mastodon

Threads content often works on Mastodon with minimal editing — both platforms reward thoughtful, conversational posts. Adjust:

- Add CamelCase to hashtags.
- Use CWs where appropriate.
- Sometimes shorten if the Threads post was very long.

### From LinkedIn to Mastodon

LinkedIn content rarely cross-posts well. The corporate tone and "humblebrag" framing common on LinkedIn lands flat on Mastodon. Either rewrite substantially or skip the cross-post.

### Bolta cross-posting

Bolta can manage Mastodon cross-posts via Hype-Man:

1. Original post drafted for primary platform (e.g., X).
2. Hype-Man drafts a Mastodon-tuned version using your Mastodon voice profile.
3. You approve both versions.
4. Cross-post happens on a slight delay so platforms don't see the same content simultaneously.

### Common myths

1. *"Mastodon doesn't matter for serious accounts."* It does — for the right niches.
2. *"I should automate everything."* Mastodon culture penalizes obvious automation. Keep it light.
3. *"Cross-posting is free reach."* It's free reach only when adapted properly.

### Action Steps

1. Configure (or audit) your Mastodon voice profile. Ensure it's tuned for Mastodon's slightly more deliberate register.
2. Set up Hype-Man with the configuration in Lesson 1. Run on Assisted autonomy for the first 30 days.
3. Decide on your cross-posting policy. Which platforms feed Mastodon, with what adaptations.

Bolta on Mastodon is light-touch. Voice and cadence matter; aggressive automation hurts. Configure deliberately. Last Mastodon lesson: how Mastodon, Bluesky, and X actually compare strategically.
