## Lesson 1: Stories Are Funnel, Not Broadcast

The biggest mistake people make with Stories: treating them as another posting surface to fill with content. They're not. They're a funnel layer.

### Who actually sees your Stories

1. **Your existing followers.** Stories don't reach non-followers via discovery. (Unlike Reels.)
2. **A subset of those followers.** Typically 5-15% of your followers will see any given Story.
3. **The most engaged followers.** Stories tend to surface for people who already engage with your posts.

This is why Stories are funnel: they're a closer-to-converted audience consuming your content.

### What "funnel" means in practice

If you run Reels for top-of-funnel discovery and carousels for retention, Stories are where you take engaged followers further:

1. **Show your face.** Stories are where audiences feel like they know you.
2. **Drive traffic.** Stories are the lowest-friction surface for sharing links (via the link sticker).
3. **Get feedback.** Polls and questions surface what your audience wants.
4. **Convert.** Stories drive product clicks, signup taps, and other monetization actions far more than feed posts.

### The cadence

- **Daily Stories** (3-7 per day) is the standard for active accounts.
- **Less than that** and you fall out of audience habit.
- **More than 10 per day** and you fatigue your audience; tap-rates drop.

### What to put in Stories

1. **Behind-the-scenes content.** Your day, your work, your moments.
2. **Polls and questions.** Engagement + insight.
3. **Reposts of your feed posts.** Drives reach back to feed.
4. **Product or signup links.** Sparingly — once or twice a week max.
5. **Reposts of audience content** (UGC). Builds community.

## Lesson 2: Highlight Architecture

Highlights are saved Stories that live on your profile permanently. Most accounts build them haphazardly. Treat them like a website navigation.

### The 5-7 highlight standard

Most strong profiles have 5-7 highlights, each with a clear purpose:

1. **About / Start Here.** Who you are, what you do, why someone should follow.
2. **Work / Portfolio.** Your best work, organized.
3. **Process / Behind the Scenes.** How you work — gives audience a peek.
4. **Testimonials / Social Proof.** What others say. Critical for businesses.
5. **Product / Offer.** What you sell or where to learn more.
6. **FAQ / Common Questions.** Answers you give over and over.
7. **Press / Features.** Where you've been featured (if applicable).

### Cover design

Highlight covers are seen at thumbnail size. They need to:
- Use the same visual style.
- Have legible icons or text.
- Look like a unified set, not random.

A simple Figma or Canva template solves this in 30 minutes. Don't skip it.

### Highlight maintenance

1. **Refresh every 90 days.** Stale Highlights signal a stale account.
2. **Reorder regularly.** Newest or most-relevant on the left.
3. **Audit content.** Some Stories you saved 6 months ago shouldn't be in Highlights anymore.

### What not to do

1. **Highlight everything.** 15+ Highlights makes your profile feel cluttered.
2. **Pure-vanity highlights.** "Squad" or "Vibes" highlights without strategic purpose are noise.
3. **Ignore covers.** Inconsistent covers signal inattention.

## Lesson 3: Sticker Mechanics

Stickers are the engagement and data tools inside Stories. Most accounts use 1-2 stickers; they should use 4-6.

### The high-value stickers

1. **Poll.** Two options. Easy tap. Great for "this or that" content.
2. **Question.** Open response. Surfaces real audience questions.
3. **Quiz.** Multiple choice with a "correct" answer. Edutainment-friendly.
4. **Slider.** Scale-based response. Useful for "how much does this resonate" content.
5. **Link.** The only direct way to drive traffic out of Stories.
6. **Add Yours.** Engagement chain — your Story prompts followers to share their version.
7. **Reminder.** For events, launches, AMAs.

### How to use stickers strategically

1. **One sticker per Story slide.** More than one and the slide feels cluttered.
2. **Use polls and questions for audience research.** "What should I post about this week?" is genuinely useful.
3. **Use quizzes for edutainment.** "Which of these is the highest-performing post format on Instagram?" pulls engagement and teaches.
4. **Use links sparingly.** Audience tunes out if every Story has a link.

### The "swipe-up effect"

Each tap on a sticker = a strong engagement signal. Strong sticker engagement = your Stories get shown to more followers next time.

Building sticker engagement habit:
- 30% of your Stories should have a sticker.
- Mix the types so you're not just polling all the time.
- Respond to Question sticker answers in follow-up Stories — drives more answers next time.

### The link sticker specifically

The link sticker is precious. Use it for:

1. **Newsletter signup.** The most durable monetization funnel.
2. **Product launches.** During the launch window.
3. **Specific resources.** "Free PDF in this Story."

Don't use it for:

1. **Generic "shop now" links.** Audience scrolls past.
2. **Every Story.** Saturation kills tap-rates.

### Common myths

1. *"Stories don't matter — only feed posts do."* They matter for retention and conversion, just not discovery.
2. *"More Stories = more reach."* Past 10 per day, tap-rate decays.
3. *"Polls are gimmicky."* Used right, they're the best audience research tool you have.

### Action Steps

1. Audit your Highlights. Do they cover the 5-7 architecture? Refresh covers if they don't match.
2. Plan tomorrow's Stories. Include at least one sticker (poll, question, or quiz).
3. Schedule a 30-day "Story discipline" — daily Stories, at least 30% with a sticker, weekly link sticker for your funnel.

Stories are funnel. Treat them like that and they convert your existing audience deeper. Next lesson: captions — the part of Instagram most people get wrong.
