Mapping ideas to formats per platform, the format-decision tree, and which formats are best for which kinds of ideas.

## Summary

Lesson from the Bolta University course "Cross-Platform Repurposing with Bolta". The full lesson text follows.

## Who this is for

- Founders
- Creators
- Marketing teams
- Agencies

## Limitations and boundaries

- Course material describes the product and the platforms at the time of writing; verify current behaviour in the app.
- Social network features, limits, and algorithms change independently of Bolta.
- Current prices and plan limits must be verified on the Bolta pricing page.

## Lesson 1: The Format-Idea Fit

Every idea has natural shapes. Some shapes work better as text; some as video; some as visual lists. Forcing an idea into the wrong shape is the most common reason cross-platform repurposing fails.

### Idea shapes

1. **Single-claim ideas.** "Replies drive more growth than posts." One sentence; one assertion. Best as: tweets, single-post X / Bluesky / Threads.
2. **List-based ideas.** "5 mistakes that kill new accounts." A discrete number of points. Best as: carousels, threads, lists.
3. **Story-based ideas.** "Here's what happened when I shipped a launch." A narrative arc. Best as: threads, Reels with voiceover, longer X / LinkedIn posts.
4. **Process-based ideas.** "How to set up a Bolta workflow." Sequential steps. Best as: carousels, screen-recording Reels, thread tutorials.
5. **Visual ideas.** "Here's what my desk looks like." Inherently visual. Best as: Reels, single Instagram images, Stories.
6. **Comparison ideas.** "X vs Y." Two-column structure. Best as: carousels (slide-by-slide), threads (point/counter-point), single image with overlay.

Most ideas fit one or two shapes well. Forcing them into a third shape often produces weak content.

### When to multi-format an idea

Strong ideas often work in 3-4 formats:

1. Original tweet (short, single-claim).
2. Thread expansion (story or list).
3. Carousel (visual list).
4. Reel (video version).

Each format reaches a different audience and reinforces the idea. This is real repurposing.

### When to pick one format only

Some ideas only fit one form:

- A pure visual works as a single image; doesn't need to be a thread.
- A complex framework with 8 components is exhausting as a thread; better as a carousel.
- A 30-second moment is a Reel; not a tweet.

Don't force-fit. Pick the strongest format for the idea.

## Lesson 2: Best Format Per Platform

Each platform has formats it rewards.

### X / Twitter

**Best:** single posts, threads, native video.
**Worst:** carousels (don't exist natively), long-form essays.

### Bluesky

**Best:** single posts, short threads (3-5 posts), boosted single ideas.
**Worst:** very long threads, video-first content.

### Threads

**Best:** single posts (200-500 chars), carousels (visual + text), short Reels.
**Worst:** long threads (Threads's reply chain isn't great).

### Instagram

**Best:** Reels, carousels, Stories (for funnel, not discovery).
**Worst:** text-only single image posts.

### Facebook

**Best:** Reels, single posts (200-500 chars), Group posts, Messenger conversations.
**Worst:** carousels (lower discoverability than IG), long threads.

### LinkedIn

**Best:** medium-length text posts (200-400 words), carousels (PDF format), native video.
**Worst:** very short tweets, Reels-style content.

### Mastodon

**Best:** medium-length text posts (200-500 chars), threads of 2-4 posts, hashtagged niche content.
**Worst:** carousels (no native), Reels (don't federate).

### The cross-platform implication

If an idea has no good fit on a platform, skip that platform for that idea. Don't force it.

A purely-visual idea probably skips X and Mastodon. A pure-text contrarian take skips Instagram. That's fine. Not every idea needs to land everywhere.

## Lesson 3: The Format Decision Tree

A simple flow to decide which formats to use for any given idea:

### Step 1 — Identify the idea shape

Single-claim? List? Story? Process? Visual? Comparison?

### Step 2 — Pick primary format

Pick the format that fits the idea best. This is your "anchor" version.

- Single-claim → primary tweet or post.
- List → primary thread or carousel.
- Story → primary thread or Reel.
- Process → primary carousel or Reel.
- Visual → primary Reel or single image.
- Comparison → primary carousel or thread.

### Step 3 — Identify reasonable adaptations

Look at your platform portfolio. Which platforms can host the primary format with light adaptation?

For example:
- A primary tweet works as: tweet on X, post on Bluesky, post on Threads, short LinkedIn post, Mastodon post (with hashtags).
- A primary thread works as: thread on X, thread on Bluesky, carousel on Threads/Instagram, longer LinkedIn post.
- A primary Reel works as: Instagram Reel, Facebook Reel, native X video, Threads video.

### Step 4 — Skip platforms where the format doesn't fit

If a primary thread doesn't translate to Mastodon (where threads aren't great), skip Mastodon for this idea. Don't force.

### Step 5 — Adapt voice register per platform

Earlier lesson covered this. Same voice; different register per platform.

### Step 6 — Schedule with offsets

Don't post all versions at the same minute. Stagger across hours or days. Different audiences see at different times; the staggered approach reads as deliberate.

### A worked example

**Idea:** "Most founders confuse autonomy with quality."

**Primary format:** thread (the idea benefits from setup, claim, and elaboration).

**Adaptations:**
- **X:** 5-tweet thread.
- **Bluesky:** 3-post short thread (Bluesky rewards punchier).
- **Threads:** 3-slide carousel + Reel teaser.
- **LinkedIn:** 250-word essay-style post.
- **Mastodon:** single 500-char post with hashtag.

**Skip:**
- **Instagram (Reels)** — the idea is talky; doesn't make a great visual.
- **Facebook** — depending on audience, might skip.

That's 5 platform versions of one idea, each native to its platform. Repurposing done right.

### Common myths

1. *"Every idea should be on every platform."* It shouldn't. Force-fit reads as forced.
2. *"The same format works everywhere."* It doesn't. Each platform's natives differ.
3. *"Carousels work everywhere."* They don't — most platforms don't have great carousel support.

### Action Steps

1. Take one idea you'd like to share. Run it through the decision tree.
2. Identify which 4-5 platforms genuinely fit. Skip the rest.
3. Draft each version. Notice which versions feel forced and which feel natural — that tells you the platform wasn't actually the right fit.

Format mapping is a craft skill. Practice it deliberately. Next lesson: cadence per platform.
