## Lesson 1: Mistakes That Kill New Accounts

The accounts that struggle on Bluesky usually share specific, fixable mistakes. Recognize them.

### Mistake 1 — Treating Bluesky like a Twitter clone

You import your X strategy unchanged: viral hooks, engagement bait, reply-guying high-status accounts. Bluesky has different norms. Cross-platform-pasting at velocity gets you ignored.

**Fix:** spend two weeks reading before you post. Match the register.

### Mistake 2 — Posting only original content, never replying

You post 4 times a day and never reply. Your follower count flatlines. You blame the platform.

**Fix:** 1:5 ratio of originals to replies. Sustained for 30 days.

### Mistake 3 — Vague positioning

Your bio says "Founder. Builder. Creator." Your posts wander between productivity tips, lifestyle, and product updates. Custom feeds can't categorize you. Starter pack curators can't include you. Followers can't predict what they'll get.

**Fix:** pick a specific niche. "Indie SaaS founder building in public" beats "founder/builder/creator."

### Mistake 4 — Cross-posting without adapting

You auto-cross-post from X. Your Bluesky posts include "rt if you agree" or thread numbering. Reads as imported.

**Fix:** strip platform-specific language. Or: rewrite once, post twice.

### Mistake 5 — Following nobody, expecting follows

Your account follows 7 people. The platform reads this as inactive or low-quality. Algorithms (yes, even custom feeds have algorithms) deprioritize accounts that don't engage with the network.

**Fix:** follow 100-300 accounts in your niche. Engage with at least 20 of them weekly.

### Mistake 6 — Promo-heavy bio and pinned post

Your bio links to your product. Your pinned post is a launch announcement. Your second post is also a launch announcement. The audience smells it instantly.

**Fix:** keep promo to 10% of content. The other 90% is value. Your product earns mention because your insights earn trust.

## Lesson 2: Behaviors That Get You Muted

Bluesky's mute culture is more active than X's. Once muted by a critical mass of your niche, growth is over. Here's what triggers it.

### Behavior 1 — Reply-spamming

Showing up in every popular post's replies with low-effort comments. Bluesky's audience notices and mutes fast.

**Fix:** be selective. Reply when you have something genuine to add.

### Behavior 2 — Pitching in DMs early

Following someone, then immediately DMing them about your product. Borderline always-mute behavior.

**Fix:** don't pitch in DMs unless you've had a multi-message public conversation first. Even then, sparingly.

### Behavior 3 — Quote-posting to dunk

Quoting someone to mock or pile on. The quote-post audience won't engage; the original poster's audience will mute you; bystanders will note the behavior.

**Fix:** disagree productively or not at all.

### Behavior 4 — Drama-mongering

Engaging in Bluesky drama (and there is some) to build follows. The audience punishes this fast.

**Fix:** stay out of platform drama. Build on substance.

### Behavior 5 — Cross-posting blatant ads

Same product post on every platform. Audience sees the seams.

**Fix:** rewrite the ad for each platform's tone. Or: don't ad-post on Bluesky at all.

### Behavior 6 — Aggressive growth tactics

"Follow for follow," "engagement pods," reply-trains. Visible at a glance to anyone who's been on the platform.

**Fix:** grow legitimately. The platform is small enough that shortcuts are seen.

## Lesson 3: The One Thing That Always Works

If you ignore everything else in this course and only do one thing, do this:

### Reply substantively, every day, in your niche.

That's it. That's the whole growth strategy.

### Why it works

1. Replies appear in feeds you can't access via posts.
2. Replies build relationships with active accounts.
3. Replies signal to the network that you're worth following.
4. Replies compound — every reply is a small bet that pays off over time as followers, mentions, and inclusions in feeds.

### The discipline

- 5 substantive replies per day.
- In your niche.
- For 90 days.
- No matter what.

That's the entire strategy. Most accounts that hit 10K followers on Bluesky did exactly this.

### What "substantive" means

1. Adds a counterpoint, example, or question.
2. Specific to the post you're replying to.
3. Brief — 100-200 characters.
4. First person.
5. Not a pitch.

### Why people skip this

1. Replies feel less "yours" than posts. They're not.
2. Replies feel like work. Posts feel like performance. (Replies are work *that compounds*.)
3. Replies don't show up in your follower count immediately. They show up six weeks later.

### Common myths

1. *"Bluesky is dead."* It isn't — but it's selective. Reply-driven accounts grow steadily.
2. *"I need to go viral."* Virality is a luxury. Compounding replies are the foundation.
3. *"I'll start replying once I have followers."* Backwards. Replies are how you get followers.

### Action Steps

1. Audit your last 30 days of Bluesky activity. What's your post-to-reply ratio? Be honest.
2. Commit to 5 substantive replies per day for the next 30 days. Track them.
3. Re-audit at day 30. Is your follower curve different? Almost always yes.

You finished the Bluesky course. The platform rewards the same discipline that builds any real audience: be specific, show up consistently, and treat every reply like the only person reading it is the only one who matters. Now go reply to someone good.
