# X (Twitter) Character Limits: Free vs Paid, What Counts, and When to Use a Thread

Last updated: 2026-07-28

The character limits on X by account type, what actually counts toward them — links, media, handles, non-Latin scripts — and why a thread is usually the better answer than a very long post.

## Summary

On X, accounts without a paid subscription are limited to 280 characters per post, while X Premium subscribers on any tier can publish posts of up to 25,000 characters. Longer pieces usually travel further as a thread: posts can be chained into a thread, where each post carries its own separate character limit.

## Limits by account type

X has changed its limits more often than any other major platform, and it sets them by subscription rather than for everyone at once. Two numbers cover almost every case, and the paid ceiling applies on every Premium tier rather than only the most expensive one.

| Account | Post length |
|-|-|
| No subscription | accounts without a paid subscription are limited to 280 characters per post |
| Paid subscription | X Premium subscribers on any tier can publish posts of up to 25,000 characters |
| Direct messages | direct messages have their own, far higher limit of 10,000 characters (unverified) |

## What counts, and what does not

The counter is not a plain character count, which is why a post can look over the limit and still send, or the reverse.

a pasted URL is wrapped in a t.co link and counts as 23 characters however long the real address is. That is good news for anyone sharing long tracked URLs: shortening a link yourself saves nothing, and a shortener only makes the destination less trustworthy to the reader.

attached photos, videos and GIFs count as zero characters and do not eat into the limit. the @handles that a reply is addressed to sit outside the post body and do not count against the limit, while a handle you type inside the body does count normally, which is why a reply deep in a crowded conversation does not lose room as more people join.

- Pasting a long URL costs the same as pasting a short one.
- Photos, video and polls are free in character terms.
- Typing a handle inside your sentence does count — only the reply prefix is exempt.

## Non-Latin scripts

characters in scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean are weighted double, halving the effective limit to 140. If you post in Japanese, Korean or Chinese, the effective ceiling is materially lower than the advertised number, which is worth knowing before drafting anything in another tool and pasting it in.

## Threads beat long posts more often than people expect

posts can be chained into a thread, where each post carries its own separate character limit. The subscription-only long post looks like the obvious upgrade, but a long post is collapsed in the timeline behind a control that readers have to tap to expand (unverified), and it gives readers exactly one place to engage.

A thread gives every idea its own post, its own metrics and its own chance to be quoted or reposted independently. When you want a piece of writing to travel, that matters more than the convenience of one long block.

- Use a long post when the piece only makes sense read end to end.
- Use a thread when the ideas are separable and you want reach.
- Make the first post work alone — most people will never see the second.

## Writing to a hard ceiling

A short limit is a constraint worth using rather than fighting. Cut the throat-clearing first: "I think that", "it seems like", "in my opinion". Then cut the qualifiers. What remains is usually sharper than the draft that fitted comfortably.

If a post still will not fit after that, it is genuinely two ideas. Splitting it almost always reads better than compressing it into abbreviations nobody parses on the first pass.

## Verification

Last verified: 2026-07-28. Platform behaviour changes frequently; claims that had not been re-checked on that date are marked unverified on the HTML page.

## How many characters can a post on X be?

accounts without a paid subscription are limited to 280 characters per post, and X Premium subscribers on any tier can publish posts of up to 25,000 characters. There is no middle tier: you are on one figure or the other.

## Do links count toward the character limit?

a pasted URL is wrapped in a t.co link and counts as 23 characters however long the real address is, so a long URL costs no more than a short one and shortening it yourself gains you nothing.

## Do images and videos use up characters?

No. attached photos, videos and GIFs count as zero characters and do not eat into the limit, which is why an image is effectively free extra context in a crowded post.

## Do @handles count in a reply?

the @handles that a reply is addressed to sit outside the post body and do not count against the limit, while a handle you type inside the body does count normally. So mentioning someone costs you room only when you write the mention into the sentence yourself.

## Why is my Japanese post cut off earlier?

characters in scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean are weighted double, halving the effective limit to 140. The advertised limit is a Latin-script figure rather than a universal one.

## Is a long post better than a thread?

Rarely, for reach. posts can be chained into a thread, where each post carries its own separate character limit, and each post in a thread can be reposted or quoted on its own, which a single long block cannot.

## What is the character limit for direct messages?

This is the one figure X's current documentation does not state: direct messages have their own, far higher limit of 10,000 characters (unverified). Either way, messages are the place for anything that needs length rather than an audience.
