And there is no standalone "Instagram DM app" — direct messages live inside the main Instagram app, and on desktop at instagram.com/direct. Open them with the paper-plane icon, top right. ## How to open and send an Instagram DM 1. Open your inbox: Tap the paper-plane icon in the top-right corner of the Instagram home screen. On a computer, go to instagram.com/direct. 2. Start a conversation: Tap the pencil or new-message icon, then search for an account by username or name. You can add several accounts to create a group thread. 3. Send the message: Type your message, or use the camera, photo and voice-note buttons to send media. You can also send an existing post, Reel or profile by tapping the paper-plane icon beneath it. 4. Check your requests: If you are missing messages, open the inbox and look for the Requests row: a message from someone you do not follow lands in a separate Requests inbox, and the sender is not shown a read receipt until you accept it. ## What DM stands for DM is short for direct message. The term is not specific to Instagram — X, TikTok, Threads and LinkedIn all use it for the same thing: a private conversation that sits outside the public feed. On Instagram specifically, a private one-to-one or group conversation visible only to the people in it, never on your profile or in the feed. That is the whole distinction people are usually looking for. A comment is public and attached to a post. A DM is private and attached to a conversation. Nothing you send in a DM appears on your profile, in anyone's feed, or in search. ## Is there an Instagram DM app? Anything in an app store calling itself an "Instagram DM app" is a third-party product, not a Meta one — and handing your login to a third party is the fastest way to lose an account. The practical setup is a small set of saved replies for the four or five questions that make up most of the inbox, plus a rule about who answers what and how quickly. The failure mode is not rudeness, it is latency. Unsending a message removes it from both sides of the conversation.
